The Environmental Learning Center is a non-profit nature center on a 51-acre island site. Through carefully developed programs and activities, the ELC encourages self-discovery and re-discovery of limitless wonders of nature.
In an era when hurried living and unbridled growth tend to diminish our senses, the ELC strives, through “hands-on-learning” to return us to our natural state – that of being fully alert to our surroundings and deeply respectful and appreciative of them. Discover the wonders of the ELC with:
- Island campus with hands-on exhibits and elevated boardwalks for guided nature strolls
- Unique eco-excursions, such as family birding trips via pontoon boat, wagon rides in a preserve, and beach walks

The Garden is a living museum of both environmental and historical significance. A melting pot for tropical plants, McKee Botanical Garden boasts 38 species of native and exotic trees (7 of which are among Florida's endangered or threatened plants), 23 species of native and exotic vines, numerous shrubs, ferns, wildflowers, as well as 8 species of native orchids. Six of the Garden's outstanding tropical trees have recently been awarded state champion status, signifying that these trees are the single largest of their species in the state of Florida. The Garden also serves as a refuge for many species of birds and butterflies. In addition to the flora and fauna, two of the original buildings built by Sexton still stand on the property: the Hall of Giants and the Spanish Kitchen. The Garden and buildings have been placed on the National Register of Historical Places and thanks in part to a grant from the Florida State Division of Historical Resources, these historic buildings have been restored. The purpose of the Pelican Island Preservation Society is to support and promote Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge (PINWR) and the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) in their efforts to conserve habitat and wildlife. T0he Pelican Island Preservation Society, Inc. is an environmental education organization with the following goals:
- To heighten awareness of Pelican Island and the more than 500 national wildlife refuges
- To present six public environmental educational meetings per year
- To promote national recognition for the natural heritage of the Sebastian area
- To sponsor an annual event celebrating the anniversary of Pelican Island
The acronym for Pelican Island Preservation Society, PIPS, is symbolic in many ways. A pip is defined as the initial break in an eggshell by a hatchling. When a pelican is ready to hatch, its first crack is called a pip. PIPS is also symbolic of the hatchling of a new concept dating from 1903, namely, to set aside lands as habitat where wildlife may breed and thrive.
