"The Spoonbill Marsh"
The Department of Utility Services has just completed a constructed wetland project on the Indian River Lagoon. For four months, exhibits will rotate including project construction photos, professional photographers nature images and original paintings by local artists.
About the Spoonbill Marsh:Spoonbill Marsh Wetland is a created wetland and part of the Indian River County Department of Utility Service potable water system. The City of Vero Beach is not involved at all with the operation of this facility. Although the by-product of potable water production is commonly referred to as “brine”, the technical name is demineralization concentrate. The water actually contains less salt than the water from the Lagoon. The purpose of Spoonbill is to dispose of this concentrate by blending it with water from the Lagoon and letting it slowly gravity flow back into the Lagoon. As the water gradually courses its way through the ponds and shallow wetlands, the process removes the polluting nutrients, which are primarily nitrogen and phosphorous. The oysters and floating plant mats enhance this uptake of nutrients.
